There are a lot of dos and don’ts when it comes to car accidents. You have to think about fault, compensation, criminal activity, proof and a lot of other information that is impacted by your actions immediately following the accident. One thing you might wonder is what to do with your car immediately following the crash. The following are some things to consider.

Play It Safe

After every car accident, safety should be the top priority. If you are injured to the point you can’t move, just stay put. If you are able to move, check on the passengers in your car, the passengers in the other car and the driver of the other car. As long as everyone is okay and able to move about, have everyone get out of the cars and safely to the side of the road.

If anyone needs first aid before the paramedics get there, render what you can. After everyone is deemed safe, and if it’s a safe setup to move your car, go ahead and move it to the side of the road.

Think of Criminal Charges

Your car accident may not feel like it, but technically it’s a crime scene and should be treated as such. Collect evidence before you move the car. This could be as simple as taking a few quick pictures of the cars in the positions they were in right after the crash.

Once you have collected evidence, it could be a smart idea to move the cars so they don’t cause another incident. Once the cars are safely moved to the side of the road, you can continue to gather evidence, such as witness contact information.

Speak With the Authorities

You should always call the authorities immediately following an accident. A police report will not only give an unbiased story of what happened, it will also be proof for you to use during court or the claims process.

When speaking with them, ask whether you should move the car. It could be possible the officer on scene will want the cars to stay as they were so he or she can get a better idea of what happened. It could also be that he or she will want them moved so as not to impede traffic any further.

Call Your Attorney
