Are you in an industry that may put you at a higher risk for Repetitive Strain Injuries?

Repetitive strain injuries are injuries from repeated movements or motions, that can cause you to develop a variety of small injuries over time.  If you find yourself repeating similar motions day after day, you may find that you will start to develop aches and pains; these could build up to actual trauma from the wear and tear on the body.  RSIs can include more than 100 types of injuries, such as inflammation, muscle strain, or tissue damage.  While most people hear of carpal tunnel in the wrist, they can also occur in the shoulders, knees, back and neck.

Many jobs require a lot of physical work; while the office worker who overuses their computer is often thought of, there are many workers who have to lift things day after day, which can cause major strain in the back.

These injuries are compensable and can be claimed under the Worker’s Compensation law.

While any job that requires similar motions day after day means their workers are more at risk to developing RSIs, here are some of the industries that cause the most strain to your body:

  • Construction workers
  • Musicians
  • Teachers
  • Lumber workers
  • Professional athletes
  • Dancers
  • Textile workers
  • Truck drivers
  • Nurses
  • Paramedics

Carrying heavy weights consistently (or people if you’re a healthcare worker!) can not only cause back pain, but also knee pain.  Poor posture can also lead to severe back pain, and if you’re a truck driver, those long distances with poor posture will do a number on your back and neck.  The Worker’s Compensation law understands that some jobs require physical labor and has caused you pain; you may be entitled to compensation.
