Keeping Your Dog Safe While Driving

Many people these days take their dogs with them on car trips. They can certainly keep you company while you are on the road. However, it is important to keep your furry family member safe to reduce the risk of accident. At Hickey & Turim, we have heard of a number of car accidents that resulted from drivers getting distracted by their dogs. Here are several tips for keeping your dog safe while driving:

Don’t Let Your Dog on Your Lap

Having your dog climb on your lap while you are driving might be adorable, but it is not exactly safe. If your dog sits on your lap while you are in the driver’s seat, it can distract you from the road in front of you and cause an accident. To prevent this from happening, make sure your furry family member stays in the back. If your dogs keeps trying to climb in the front seat, consider installing a barrier into the back.

Put a Seatbelt on Your Dog

Humans aren’t the only ones who should wear seatbelts. It’s equally as important to buckle up your dog before you hit the road. There are seatbelts specifically designed for canines and will keep your furry friend safe and secure.

Use a Crate

If your dog tends to get overly excited and barks at everything he sees, you may want to consider putting him in a crate. It will keep him comfortable and calm during the car ride. If your dog still barks, you could put a blanket over the crate.

Never Leave Your Dog Unattended in a Hot Car

No matter what, don’t leave your furry family member in a parked hot car. The temperatures can get dangerously hot very fast and cause your dog to have a heat stroke.

Bring Water

If you’re going for a long drive, it is important to bring plenty of water for your dog. Going too long without water can dehydrate your furry family member, especially if it’s hot outside. At least every hour or so, pull over to a safe spot, pour some water into a dog bowl and let your pooch have a drink.

Don’t Let Your Dog Hang His Head Out the Window

Dogs might love hanging their heads out the car window and getting some fresh air, but it isn’t safe for them. If your pooch sticks his head out the window, debris can hit him and injure him. The heavy airflow can also damage your dog’s respiratory system. That’s why you should keep the windows closed while you are driving with your dog in the car.

If you or your dog were hurt in a car accident caused by another driver’s negligence, you may be able to sue for damages. A car accident lawyer in Milwaukee WI from Hickey & Turim, S.C. may help you file the lawsuit in a timely manner.
