Vehicle safety should be one of the most critical components of a buyer’s decision.  Americans spend an average of 293 hours driving each year; that’s a lot of time spent while arguably putting your life at a huge risk, seeing as auto accidents are a leading cause of death in this country.  With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list that draws upon Insurance Institute for Highway Ratings (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ratings to find 9 of the most dangerous car brands (not in particular order).

#9. GMC

Percent that received a 5-star NHTSA rating: 32.7%

Percent that achieved an IIHS award: 10.5%

#8. Cadillac

Percent that received a 5-star NHTSA rating: 42%

Percent that achieved an IIHS award: 0%

#7. Ford

Percent that received a 5-star NHTSA rating: 12%

Percent that achieved an IIHS award: 21%

#6. Chevrolet

Percent that received a 5-star NHTSA rating: 4.5%

Percent that achieved an IIHS award: 20.5%

#5. Nissan

Percent that received a 5-star NHTSA rating: 10%

Percent that achieved an IIHS award: 25% (far below its Japanese competition that average 40%)

#4. BMW

Percent that received a 5-star NHTSA rating: 20.7%

Percent that achieved an IIHS award: 3.4% (a significant drop from all other luxury brand counterparts that average 14.9%)

#3. Dodge Ram

Percent that received a 5-star NHTSA rating: 17%

Percent that achieved an IIHS award: 7.1%

#2. Mercedes-Benz

Percent that received a 5-star NHTSA rating: 5%

Percent that achieved an IIHS award: 8%

#1. MINI

Percent that achieved an IIHS award: 10% (far behind the average of 30% of other non-luxury brand vehicles)

Of course, this list is more cautionary than absolute; some individual makes are safer than others.  You should look into the vehicles that achieved the 5-star rating or IIHS award.  And if you find out that your model does not make this list, just be wary on your next choice.  Make sure you get your maintenance done and keep an eye out for any safety recalls.  The Takata airbag recently caused millions of car’s airbags to be recalled due to them containing explosive material that has killed over 10 people.  If you’d like to read more about that recall and if your vehicle is affected, please click here.
